First-run setup token

Find the one-time setup token that the setup wizard asks for on a new installation.

For: Administrators completing a new installation · Last updated

A new installation has an empty database. The first request your browser makes creates the company and prints a one-time setup token to the app container's log. Your browser is then sent to the Set up this company page, which asks for that token. You use it to create the first administrator account.

Get the token#

  1. Open your deployment's address in a browser. This first request is what creates the token, so do this before you look for it.

  2. On the box, run the helper that sits next to install.sh:

    ./find-setup-token.sh

The script reads the app container's log for the Compose project wi-prod and prints the token. It works from any directory.

  3. On the Set up this company page, paste the token into Setup token, then fill in Your name, Your email, Password, and Confirm password, and select Set up company.

If the script reports that it found no onboarding.bootstrapped log line, open the address in a browser once and run the script again.

You can read the token by hand too. It is the setup_token field of the onboarding.bootstrapped event in sudo docker compose -p wi-prod logs app.

Treat the token as a secret until you have used it.

After setup#

Selecting Set up company creates the first administrator, ends the setup flow, and signs you in. You land in the normal app with an empty roster. The Coworker workbench container for your company starts in the background.
