Attaching files to a message

Attach images and documents to a chat message, and download files from a conversation.

For: Any signed-in user who can chat with a Coworker · Last updated

You can attach files to a message so the Coworker can work with them.

Attach a file#

  1. Select the + button (its tooltip reads Attach a file) to the left of the message box.
  2. Choose a file. A chip appears above the box reading "Uploading" and the file name, then the file name, or a thumbnail for an image.
  3. Type a message, or leave the box empty, and select Send.

You can attach more than one file by repeating the steps. To remove a file before sending, select the × on its chip. A message can consist of attachments alone.

What you can attach#

  • Images: PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF
  • PDF files
  • Office documents: Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Text files: TXT, Markdown, CSV and JSON

Each file can be up to 10 MB. If a file is too large or is not an accepted type, a message appears above the message box explaining why and the file is not attached.

Files in a sent message#

Images in your message show as thumbnails. Other files show as a button with the file name; select it to download. Select an image thumbnail to open it in a new tab.

The Files list#

Every file in the conversation, whether you attached it or the Coworker shared it, is listed under Files in the Shared Context section of the context pane. Each row shows the file name, its type and its size. Select the download button to save it.

When a file is on the Coworker's computer, because the Coworker shared it or picked up a file you attached, the row also has a replace button (the tooltip reads "Replace" followed by the file name and "with a different file"). Choose a file and it takes the place of the original, and the Coworker is told the file was replaced. The row shows "replacing…" and then "replaced ✓". If it does not work, the row shows "replace failed". A file that is not on the Coworker's computer has no replace button.

Anyone in your company who has the link to a file can download it while signed in.
