What your abilities mean

How abilities decide what you can see and do, with a plain-language guide to each one and to supervising a Coworker.

For: Any signed-in user · Last updated

Abilities decide which actions are open to you. An administrator gives you abilities, and you can hold several at once. Everyone also has the basic member access that lets them sign in, chat with Coworkers they can see, and use the pages everyone shares.

When you do not have an ability, the matching button or section is hidden. If you need something you cannot see, ask an administrator.

The abilities#

Ability Shown in the team screen as What it lets you do
admin Admin Manage the company's setup and people, and act on every Coworker as if you were its Supervisor. Includes every ability below.
hire_coworkers Hire Coworkers Hire a Coworker, be chosen as a Coworker's Supervisor, and edit Work Centers on the Map.
manage_knowledge_bases Manage Knowledge Bases Create Knowledge Bases, and manage the ones you own or are an editor on.
manage_apps Manage Apps Register Apps and manage any App.
people_manager People Manager See company-wide usage and cost in Governance.
manage_financial_inputs not listed there Edit the Output and Workforce cost figures behind the WI Score, and launch a survey campaign. Admins can do both too.

Admin#

Admins see an Administration view in Settings, create and manage Teams, and can manage every Coworker. Choosing Admin for a person also selects Hire Coworkers, Manage Knowledge Bases and Manage Apps, because an admin can already do all three. People Manager stays a separate choice.

Hire Coworkers#

Without this ability the roster has no Hire a Coworker button, and opening the hiring page directly shows "Hiring a Coworker requires the Hire Coworkers ability. Ask an admin for access." Only people with this ability appear in the Supervisor list while hiring. See Hiring a Coworker.

Manage Knowledge Bases#

This ability lets you create a Knowledge Base, and you become its owner. It does not give you control over every Knowledge Base in the company: you manage the ones you own or are an editor on. Admins can manage all of them.

Manage Apps#

With this ability, or as admin, you see the button to register a new App and can manage any App, including its lifecycle. The App's own Builder can always manage it.

People Manager#

This ability opens the Usage & cost view in Governance. It is separate from the Score link, which appears for admins and for anyone who is a named Supervisor.

Manage financial inputs#

This ability, or admin, lets you save the figures on the Score page and launch the WI Score survey. Seeing the Score page itself depends on supervising a Coworker or being an admin, as described in Navigating the app.

Supervising a Coworker#

Being a Coworker's Supervisor is a relationship rather than an ability. Each Coworker has one named human Supervisor, chosen when it is hired. A Supervisor, and any admin, can:

  • change the Coworker's instructions, model, Knowledge Bases and Team;
  • advance it through its phases, or retire it;
  • record reviews and read its feedback;
  • set up triggers.

Other people can see and chat with a Coworker depending on its phase, as described in The Coworker roster.
