For: People with the Hire Coworkers ability or admin · Last updated

You need the hire_coworkers or admin ability to create or edit a Work Center.

To create one, select Define a Work Center on the Intelligence Map. To change one, select Edit on its card. The page is headed Name a Work Center. when you create and Edit this Work Center. when you edit.

The fields#

Every field in the table below except Team is required. Until all are filled in, the page shows "Every field below is part of what defines this Work Center — fill them all in." and the save button is unavailable.

Field What to enter
Name A short name, such as Renewal Benchmarking.
Team The team that owns the work. Choose from your teams, or leave No team.
Inputs What comes in: the documents, data, requests or events the work starts from.
Processing What happens to the inputs: the steps, judgment calls and checks.
Outputs What the work produces and who receives it.
Cadence How often it happens, such as Daily, Per deal or Ongoing.
Stakes What goes wrong if the work is done badly. Higher stakes are a reason to keep more human oversight.
Ownership Who is accountable today. A role or team is fine.

A panel titled About these fields stays beside the form with this guidance.

Your starting answers#

These place the Work Center on the map before it has been tested.

  • Intelligence asks whether the judgment the work takes is reducible to rules. Choose Reducible or Irreducible. Irreducible means the task needs human judgment or accountability.
  • Capability asks whether the work can be done reliably today without a person. Choose Reducible (AI can perform it today) or Irreducible (AI cannot).
  • Where the intelligence lives today lets you select any of In people's heads, In relationships, In documents and In processes.
  • Documented is low, partial or high: how well the knowledge is written down.
  • Transferable is low, partial or high: how easily someone else could pick the work up.

New Work Centers start with both axes Reducible and both levels partial.

For a Work Center without a classification, a note explains that these are your starting answers and that the Irreducibility Test confirms them. If you edit a Work Center that is already classified, the note reads "Changing these updates this Work Center's classification." The classification always follows the two axes.

Saving#

  • Create Work Center (or Save changes when editing) saves and returns you to the map. While saving the button reads Saving….
  • Run Irreducibility Test → appears only when editing. It saves your changes and then opens the test.
  • Cancel returns to the map without saving.

If something goes wrong, the message appears beside the buttons.
